Question

Simple PHP Cart Example

Asked by: koopddesign

Hello all,

I'm on the lookout for a simple PHP shopping cart example, the code must be simple and easy to understand. :)

I just want to know the basic principles of the actual 'cart', adding, deleting and editing quantities of products, and what the best way of doing this is (or the easiest) i.e storing orders in database, using sessions, using cookies?

A good tutorial/example that I can integrate into my real world application would be perfect.

Thanks

I think you check at

http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/E-Commerce/Shopping_Carts/index.html

there a lot of shopping cart examples, some commercial, most free...
You can download the script and loo at the sources... is the best way to learn how to do a thing in php.

Hmm... I have looked at Hot Scripts site, nothing really that good in there. I am definitely after a simple example of handle a cart rather than trying to wade through someone elses mix of php/html code to learn something. ;)

hi koopddesign,

There is an example of working with a cart in the manual for OOP.

http://us4.php.net/manual/en/language.oop.php

An extended basic example:

<?php
session_start();

class Cart {
 var $items = array();

 function add_item($name,$quantity=1) {
  if (array_key_exists($name,$this->items)) {
   $this->items[$name] += $quantity;
  }
  else {
   $this->items[$name] = $quantity;
  }
 }

 function remove_item($name) {
  if (array_key_exists($name,$this->items)) {
   unset($this->items[$name]);
  }
  else {
   return false;
  }
 }

 function show_cart() {
  return($this->items);
 }

}

if (!isset($_SESSION['cart'])) $_SESSION['cart'] = new Cart;
$cart = &$_SESSION['cart'];

if (isset($_GET['action'])) {

 if ($_GET['action'] == 'add') {
  if(isset($_GET['quantity'])) {
   $cart->add_item($_GET['item'],$_GET['quantity']);
  }
  else {
   $cart->add_item($_GET['item']);
  }
 }
 elseif ($_GET['action'] == 'remove') {
  $cart->remove_item($_GET['item']);
 }

}

foreach ($cart->show_cart() as $item => $quantity) {
 echo " - Item Name: $item Quantity: $quantity<br>\n";
}
?>

Adding an item:

page.php?action=add&item=itemname >> this will add one item to the cart of name, itemname
page.php?action=add&item=itemname&quantity=4 >> this will allow you to add a specific quantity of an item to the cart

Removing an item:

page.php?action=remove&item=itemname >> this will remove the item from the cart.

This is just a basic example to show you how you could build a cart, you can expand it further by adding more validation and perhaps adding options to adjust the quantity of an item in the cart.
