regular expressions

I am trying to look for strings like

index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5

So I used this expression in a preg_replace to find these and that works.

'/index\.php\?act\=viewCat\&amp\;catId\=([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/ie',

Now I want to only replace if it is not a form action. So I don't want the below line to be replaced.

action = "index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5"

So I modified the search string to this

'/(?!action\s*\=\s*(\"|\'))index\.php\?act\=viewCat\&amp\;catId\=([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/ie',

But that doesn't work. Why is that? And whats the right expression?

You seem to be escaping way too many characters and also you put 'i' modifier yet put a-zA-Z lets first simplify this down...

'/(?!action\s*=\s*("|\'))index\.php\?act=viewCat&catId=([a-z\d]+)/ie',

'/(?<!action=["\'])index\.php\?act=viewCat&amp;?catId=([a-z\d]+)/ie'

above is best I can get it. Be aware that the look behind assertion must be a fixed lenght so using + and * etc are not allowed. when doing it.

But there might be number of whitespaces between action and = and quote

Cryptic that expression didn't seem to work.

form actions such as

action = "index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5"

were still being replaced by the preg_replace.

What are trying to replace? Just the catId if it is not in a action=??. I wouldn't use a extended regex for that. If that's not what your trying to do explain exactly what you want to replace and I will show you how to do it!
