'/(?<!action=["\'])index\.
above is best I can get it. Be aware that the look behind assertion must be a fixed lenght so using + and * etc are not allowed. when doing it.

Browse All TopicsI am trying to look for strings like
index.php?act=viewCat&catI
So I used this expression in a preg_replace to find these and that works.
'/index\.php\?act\=viewCat
Now I want to only replace if it is not a form action. So I don't want the below line to be replaced.
action = "index.php?act=viewCat&cat
So I modified the search string to this
'/(?!action\s*\=\s*(\"|\')
But that doesn't work. Why is that? And whats the right expression?

You seem to be escaping way too many characters and also you put 'i' modifier yet put a-zA-Z lets first simplify this down...
ndex\.php\ ?act=viewC at&cat Id=([a-z\d ]+)/ie',
'/(?!action\s*=\s*("|\'))i
