The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Pulling data from remote HTML pages, regular expression help?

Asked by heruraha in PHP Scripting Language

I'm a fairly good PHP programmer, but I haven't worked much with regular expressions (which I think is what I need to be using here) and I think I need to call in some help on this problem.

I've got a client whose current webmaster is essentially holding his website hostage, and he wants me to rebuild it.  Forensically reconstructing his pages has been no problem, but now I've got to extract some 20,000+ articles from the old website and put them into my new database.

Cutting and pasting them one at a time is obviously out of the question, so I've been trying to write a script that will open the remote pages and pull out a few pieces of data - Title, Date, Time, Author, and Body of the article.  All of these articles are displayed on fairly predictable template pages, though obviously the data I'm trying to extract is variable from article to article and the template page rotates through banner ads.

I've used eregi_replace before, and I tried adapting a similar technique here but I'm not savvy enough with regular expressions to figure out how to make it find large blocks of text or highly variable data in a huge haystack.

So basically if one of you can give me a crash-course in regular expressions with a view towards what I've said above and allow me a few follow-up Q+As, I've got 250 points for you :)

Or, maybe someone has a better idea....
