What's the best way to implement a list of objects?

I'm new to Object Oriented Programming, and I'm teaching myself how to do it. I've got a very basic question about the best way to set up a list of objects. It's probably more of a stylistic question than anything, but I'm just curious how you guys handle what seems like a very common situation:

I'm working on a site for an art gallery. I've created a class named "Artist" that represents one artist. What is the best way to write a page that displays a list of these artists?

I figure I have three options:

1. create a new class called "ArtistList" which queries the database for all artists and stores an array of "Artists" - but this seems like overkill. Do I really need a separate class for this?

2. create a function inside "Artists" called "getAllArtists" that queries the database for all the artists, and returns an array of Artist objects. But this seems odd, since the "Artist" class was designed to hold one artist - so it feels like I'm just jamming a function in there to get what I need - not like it really belongs there.

3. just query the database in my code and assign each row to a new object, pushing it onto an array of objects. This seems to make the most sense, but there's something I really like about how many of my SQL calls are getting hidden from my php pages. It'd be great not to have to look at the SQL statement in my main code except in some class definition somewhere.

what do you guys do? create a separate list class? add a "get all" function inside the class? or just make an array of objects in your php code?
