I should probably encourage you to be rigorous in checking the type too, if you haven't done it already, by doing something like this:
if (is_numeric($amount) {
if ( strlen($amount) < 10 ){
$msg=$msg."Amount is less than 10<BR>";
$status= "NOTOK";
}
} else {
$msg=$msg."Amount is not a number<BR>";
$status= "NOTOK";
