.htaccess and mod_rewrite for custom friendly url

I need some help with mod_rewrite and maybe htaccess. I am new to apache so I apologize in advance.

Part 1. I would like it so that if someone went to my site at [anything].domain.com it would forward them to r.domain.com. For example, if someone went to www.domain.com/sitemap.php it would forward the user to r.domain.com/sitemap.php

Part 2. I would like the availability to give users a subdirectory that doesn't interfere with system folders. I would like to have r.domain.com/[username] actually access r.domain.com/user.php?username=[username] but I would like to keep php files in the root directory available (index.php, sitemap.php, anything.php) and the subfolders system, tools, images.

So if someone goes to www.domain.com/tools it sends them to r.domain.com/tools but if they went to www.domain.com/johndoe it would send them to r.domain.com/johndoe but process it as r.domain.com/user.php?username=johndoe
