Create 2 or 3 random image thumbnails & display on php web page

I would like a single php script (w/o using GD) that will do the following:
(I want all the variables defined at the top of the script for ease of administration, and as many variables as possible so there is as little hard coding as possible)

1. Randomly select a specified number of images (aka photos) (in my case I will prob select say 2 or 3) from a folder (say "../images/photos", this also needs to be a variable)

2. Generate thumbnails of these images - with a maximum height/width/auto defined in the variables at the top.
- for example, $imgWide=; $imgHigh=; $imgAuto=100; in the variables
- then the script will make images either as 100 wide or 100 high or
for auto, 100 pixels high for portrait images and 100 pixels wide for landscape images.

3. Have the images use a single link (with no border, hspace or vspace around the image), for example, each/all images when clicked will go to "http://mywebpage.com/myphotos" (again, variable defined)

4. Display the images where I put a PHP include in my web page that refers to this script

- inline comments would be a big help
