Question

keep proportions - resize png with transperent colors, and some other adjustments

Asked by: thor918

I'm currently using this resize class:
http://www.programmers-corner.com/sourcecode/254
it does work pretty good in my setup where I store the generated thumb in a database.

however, I would like some adjustments to the class:
 * resize of transperent pngs (and probably gifs) will result of black fill on the transparent areas. I would like this fixed.. here are some sample pngs that does not work as it is now.
http://home.no.net/thor918/layout/transperent/
* when I set maxwidth=100 maxheight=100.. the resized image can be for example w=100px h=50px, I would then want to have a  (image1) transperent image created w=100px,h=100px, and the resized image(image2) placed in the center of the blank transperent image(image1).. I only need to save the result in PNG format.

here is another thumb-class that is good, but I find the first one I linked to much simpler, and thats why I have selected that one instead:
http://www.gen-x-design.com/projects/php-thumbnailer-class/

thanks for the help;)

Thanks!

this one caught my eye:
http://www.mediumexposure.com/techblog/smart-image-resizing-while-preserving-transparency-php-and-gd-library
I'm about to test it in my system now..
if that works, I may be switching to that function instead.and perhaps get the second request I had working there.

by: thor918Posted on 2007-12-20 at 14:12:19ID: 20510327

Tested. and it works pretty good ;)
http://home.no.net/thor918/layout/transperent/
png-24 = success
png-8   = transparent are displayed as noice
however I use png-24 in most cases when I use png. so it's okey for now.

now, I need to see on my second request.

* when I set maxwidth=100 maxheight=100.. the resized image can be for example w=100px h=50px, I would then want to have a  (image1) transperent image created w=100px,h=100px, and the resized image(image2) placed in the center of the blank transperent image(image1).. I only need to save the result in PNG format.

a little typo:
png-8   = transparent are displayed as noice
should be
png-8   = transparent are displayed as noise

I have changed the code to make an extra image, and then copy the resized image over there. It currently works and tested with transparent png and jpg.
the only thing missing now is placing the image to the center, and perhaps clean up the hacks ;)
I marked my changes with "hack"

Okey.
that did the trick..
is this code okey?

after my tests, it seems I made it....

$cropSize_width = $final_width;
$cropSize_height = $final_height;

$cropX = intval(($width - $cropSize_width) / 2);
$cropY = intval(($height - $cropSize_height) / 2);

imagecopy ( $image_frame ,  $image_resized , $cropX , $cropY , 0 , 0 , $final_width , $final_height );
$image_resized = $image_frame;

cleaned up the center code looks like this now:

	if($forcetransparentbox){
		//find new coordinates to center the image
	    $newX = intval(($width - $final_width) / 2);
	    $newY = intval(($height - $final_height) / 2);

		imagecopy ( $image_frame ,  $image_resized , $newX , $newY , 0 , 0 , $final_width , $final_height );
	 	$image_resized = $image_frame;
	};
