Replace all whitespace with a single space

Hello,

How can I replace all whitespace with one space?

All whitespace including spaces and /n /r /t should be replaced with a single space.

So if there are five spaces in a row, they should be replaced with only one space and if there are 5 new lines they should also be replaced with one space.

Do any of the ideas take more or less memory / cpu resources?

just little modified ed987's solution to catch any whitespaces
$tx=preg_replace('/\s+/',' ',$tx);

the preg_replace should be proffered solution IMHO.

angelIII solution won't work when there are more than 2 whitespaces in sequence
             ( eg. "a            b" )
simonkin solution won't work (unless original $string is already ok)
