The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Do you play chess?  Do you know how chess players are ranked?

I play chess recreationally with a bunch of other students. We want to set up a simple website where our group leader can input the data of everyone's past win/loss records as well as upcoming win/losses against other fellow players. This data could be put into a database or maybe just a simple text file that can be parsed into arrays for ranking calculations. The "data" consists of 3 simple items:

1) names of players
2) date of match
3) win/loss/draw

We then want to take the win/loss data and implement an ELO rating system (please Google it if you don't know what this is) to tell us how we rank. That's it!  This question is perfect for chess players or those smart enough to understand how chess players are ranked.

The code for ELO MAY already be done here (I'm not sure):
http://jobemakar.blogspot.com/2007/05/why-elo-rating-system-rocks.html

A perfect example of a site we'd like to duplicate is: http://chessrankings.com/

The site doesn't have to be pretty. We care about function over form. An example of this is:
http://www.ighs-tennis.com/pr_2007.html

For those who understand ELO feel free to use 1000 as a normal value and whatever K value you want. This variable can easily be changed in the future, we just want to understand the code infrastructure and learn from your example.Start Free Trial
