using .htaccess to turn off PHP error notices

How is this done? I've done it loads of times but I just can't seem to remember.

if you get an internal server error then you are not allowed to change that setting via .htacess Contact your webhoster to allow you this type of changing php settings.

error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);

in the php code itself, then the error notices are not shown...so does that the host does allow it to be changed?

most probable you are not allowed. but if you can post your error_log  (Apache) we can see what is the exact reason

FAST/CGI does not support this type of value in .htaccess, only if you use php as apache-module

FOR a workarounf for CGI see
http://www.php.net/manual/en/configuration.changes.php#76362
or change the code.

looks like your server is configured to run PHP in the cgi executable form. In this form the php module is not loaded into the server and apache don't know about the php_value directive.

Only option is ask your host provider.
