The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Making a Multiplayer Backgammon Website

Asked by Frosty555 in PHP Scripting Language, MySQL Server, WebApplications

I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas for creating a multiplayer online backgammon website.  Basically something very similar to "Gamesgrid", if anyone has played on that.  I just don't want to use Java, or any external EXEs or ActiveX. Too much installation issues on the user's end.

Anyways, I'm looking for some ideas on how to get started. A backgammon board is quite a complex thing to make in HTML. Perhaps PHP's graphics libraries would be better to render the board? But on the same note it needs to be interactive, e.g. clicking on a piece to move it to a new location.

And then there's the issue of waiting for the person on the other end to make a move. How do you know when they've made the move? I could use AJAX to hit the database every couple of seconds, but the overhead would be enormous if you imagine 100 games running at the same time.

I was thinking maybe I could do it in flash, but I still need to create a permanent connection to the server. In that case, what should I write the server program in? It needs to manage users/games AND know the rules to backgammon... and it's not going to be a server that I have any real access to. I'm limited to a basic dedicated server from your average web host. Preferably I'd like to do it all in something like PHP, where it doesn't involve me installing and running my own custom software on the server.

Any ideas are welcome. This is more of a brainstorming session than anything else so I'm happy for any insight anyone might have.
