The Solution Rating System

User website file upload capability - folder writeable (chmod 777) - security risk?

Hi,

I have the need to make a folder writeable to all (Chmod 777) as the user of my PHP/MySQLapplication needs to be able to upload pictures.

I have read that I need to make the folder whcih the picures / files are uploaded to, to be publicly writeable?
This all works fine but isnt this a massive security risk? Doesn't that mean that someone else can write a script on their own server that overwrites everything in that folder?

Also note the folder is viewable on the web (and it is mean to be) as it is located in the pubic_html folder.

What does one do to prevent others overwriting all the files / adding there own?
