Sending a string via XMLHttpRequest

Hi,

I'm using a XMLHttpRequest to do that brand new thing call 'the AJAX'.

So I want to send over a few parameters to a PHP script like:

    var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();
    xhr.open('GET', 'myscript.php?instrument=violin;food=apple;color=blue, true);
   
As far as I can tell, the above is going to be turned into one big string for sending. So how do you actually delimit the different parameters you want to send to the php script? I thought to just put semi-colons between params or something then do somekind of tokenizer routine on the php side to split the raw string back into individual parameters again.

So on the php side I have:

     <?php
         echo($_GET['instrument']);
         echo($_GET['food']);
         echo($_GET['color']);
     ?>

Where am I supposed to retrieve the raw string that was passed, then tokenize/explode it into parameters? I was thinking that maybe the raw string was in one of those mysterious global arrays? The above is just an example of what I wanted to end up with.
