easy regex

I want to be able to erase "</ br>" but only from certain parts of a text.

For example if I have a text like this:

$text = "some text some text</ br>
some text some text</ br>
<table></ br>
<tr></ br>
<td>some text some text</ br>
</td></ br>
</tr></ br>
</table></ br>
some text some text</ br>
some text";

then I want to be able to erase all </ br> between <table> and </table>.

One or more instances. (I want it to work if I have several separate tables, or tables in tables.)
