I don't get it, the majority of PHP jobs that I see offered require the applicant to have experience in a LAMP envrionment. Why is LAMP so important? I have a Mac and I use a software called MAMP to create my PHP websites locally. If I didn't have a Mac I would probably been developing in a Windows environment. Isn't PHP the same PHP across the different platforms?
I wanted to get an idea of what the fuss is all about so I visited the linux site to obtain a copy only to find out there are like a gagillion different distributions of Linux to choose from. Some of the distributions seemed to be more popular so I arbitrarily choose one named Ubuntu and installed it on my emulater.
My conclusion is that it looks pretty and has a lot of cool free software that came with it but I still don't get why Employers need applicants to be LAMP professionals. What's the big deal? How hard is it to adjust to a Linux distribution? Also why would an Employer not specify which distribution of LAMP to use?
I know I must be missing the bigger picture here but I just don't get it. Can someone please help explain.
Thanks
