Microsoft Automation (Serial) Date conversion in PHP

I have a database listed with dates in Serial Format that were generated by Excel example 10/3/08 = 39724

I now have to display these dates on a web page. But I have no idea how to convert 39724 back to 10/3/08 in PHP. Anyone have any ideas?

this number represents number of days from  1. January 1900. so for example excel date 15 is translated to 15.Jan.1900 etc..
