Hi, I have an script that generals SEO friendly URLs like:
http://yoursite.com/forum/
But one of my customer uses for english teaching site in Japan, so he says when the post title starts in Japanese, the link won't work because of the garbage generated by the unicodes. I believe it's not a good idea to include unicodes because not all browsers or system will understand them. So my question is how to strip non-ASCII characters out intelligently? A working sample function to do this would be greatly appreciated. This way it will only generate url like
http://yoursite.com/forum/
But if the title is mixed with English and Japanese, is ti better to only strip out the unicodes or strip out the English so it will not be included on SEO?
and not something like
http://yoursite.com/forum/
assuming that "asf9@#$@0sdfh" is in Japanese?

Another idea will be to avoid "needing" non-ASCII chars in the addressbar. I'll give you an example: Some blogging software like Wordpress allow you to assign "two" titles to a category. One is in the native language, the other is necessarily in English. So if there is a page about "Hello", you can name the page as "Ohaio" (in Japanese script, of course!) but give "Hello" as its second name too. This way, the URL will look like: http://example.com/forum/c
