should be for instance

Any ideas how to clean this ?

Beware that prepending all numeric ids, names etc. with a letter might clash with an id="a1" that might already exist.
In other words, you'd have to prepend a letter to *all* ids, names etc.
Don't forget ids used in javascript to reference the DOM
Don't forget names used in server-side scripts to referrence form fields.
Don't forget anchored hrefs from third-party websites.

If you're dealing with possibly invalid XHTML then you should really use something like HTMLPurifier which has a built in Tidy feature. It will correct and tidy the XHTML.
