CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS question

based on http://us.php.net/curl_setopt CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS is:

The full data to post in a HTTP "POST" operation. To post a file, prepend a filename with @ and use the full path. This can either be passed as a urlencoded string like 'para1=val1&para2=val2&...' or as an array with the field name as key and field data as value.

my client wants to issue http post operation without parameter or field name.. something like the following:

curl_setopt ($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $xml)

where $xml = '<root><name>aaa</name></root>';

how can I parse it using php because usually, in order to get the post variable, I have to use something like
$xml_input = $_POST[variable_name];

if there is no variable name, how can i retrieve the data?
