Question

Regular Expression: Sentence Structure, workaroud for full stop rule

Asked by: Fahdmurtaza

Hi experts

I am using the following script to crop a text by number of sentences. It works fine except when some abbreviations like U.S comes within the text. I want this rule to neglect situations like that. Any help would be appreciated. I have copied and pasted my whole function in the code segment of this question.

Try the code below. Assumption: Every sentence ends with .!? followed by a space, or with .!? not followed by a space at the end of the string.

Wow guru!

You solved my issue; my  hero! Long live EE.

One more thing please. Suggest me how to learn Regular Expressions. My skills in this very thing are pretty weak. So any books; online sources that you think would be helpful? Please!

For giving back something to EE community, here is my complete PHP RSS reader. I will post more details about it on my site and will provide a link here.

A good start might be the tutorial on http://www.regular-expressions.info/

I don't own a regular expression book, but the site lists a few as well: http://www.regular-expressions.info/books.html

by: FahdmurtazaPosted on 2009-03-27 at 10:08:51ID: 24003240

so can you guide me the way you learn? The way you followed.

Also I am using this for cropping description from an XML feed.

http://universalcoders.com/rss-feed/sitrep.php

So I need help modifying it so that it neglects U.S. (yes both the dots or so called full stops used for abbreviation)

Right now we only have this issue with abbreviations for United States. So U.S. is basically needed to be sorted in the above function you gave me.

Regards,
Fahd Murtaza

by: FahdmurtazaPosted on 2009-03-27 at 10:34:11ID: 24003488

may be somehow we can neglect U.S. and the rest is altready fine.

May be with (below) but that regEx might be quite inefficient if it can't find a match (competition between both (U\.S\.|[^.?!]+)-parts)

    $re = "/^\s*((U\.S\.|[^.?!]+)(U\.S\.|[^.?!]+))+[.?!]+\s*/";
