Q about friendly urls

hi experts,

I did read some articles about friendly urls .. but I still dont undedrtsnd why this url :
http://www.example.com/articles.php/art_id/15/page/2/
is better than this one:
http://www.example.com/articles.php?art_id=15&page=2

in my site the url looks like this:
http://www.example.com/?{some_string}
in php I use explode to get what I need from {some_string}
is this a bad practice?
