Question

How to install and run phpmyadmin in Ubuntu 9

Asked by: elvin66

I have installed Ubuntu desktop on a usb drive and are just starting to look at it for learning. I have also installed LAMP Server so I can set up my databases and create my php driven websites in Linux instead of xp. The Lamp has installed properly and is working but I downloaded Phpmyadmin from linux and I ran an install command which appreared to work ok. My problem is, how do I easily run phpmyadmin as I use this everyday in windows. Thre other big problem is, I'm trying to copy my php files over from my windows drive and I can't paste them into the www directory/folder as I don't have permission (it is owned by root).

Is it possible for me to grant myself permission to this root folder or in fact all folders as this is my personal laptop and I use it for developement. No other users have access to this machine.

Check the install folder for phpmyadmin, normally /etc/phpmyadmin/

Also, this link may help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/phpMyAdmin

For copying files over, you just have to give yourself permission.  The command to do that will look like:

chmod 0777 /directory/

Ok so I'm a complete nube at linux ok. So I open a terminal window and type it in there?  What path is the www directory located in ? When I open the file system (explorer window) there are a zillion folders. I think it is in the etc directory but I'm not sure and I'm not booted into Ubuntu at this point.

As for PhpMyAdmin, I'm looking for the exact command to type into firefox to load it. Everything I have read so far tells me to type http://localhost/phpmyadmin like I do in windows but it doesn't find anything

Correct about terminal.

Check the /etc/apache/ directory for a file called apache.conf (it may be in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf).  In this file it should tell you where the www directory is.

try http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin

localhost is a windows thing.

PS Good choice on ubuntu.  I use that one because it's got a simple GUI and can use all the complex commands & functions like debian.

are you running ubuntu virtually?

why didn't you just use wammp with is the xp/vista version of lamp

you will need to know the ip address of your unbuntu 'box' as localhost points to 127.0.0.1 which is aslways local

you may need to use the host file to setup a url to your ubuntu 'box'

I setp a complete ubuntu test web server , apache, php5 , mysql, phpmyadmin using an old 486sx pc that I had aquired  and it worked fine

one installer will install all including myphpadmin for you

Really easy (about 3 clicks)

IanTh.  I am using Ubuntu. WAmp is only a windows application. I have already installed Lamp on my linux drive and it already works, just don't know how to get phpmyadmin running.

Grakem. I know I typed it correctly but in case you guys missed it, I am using both Linux and windows but have to boot into linux so my wamp server won't work in linux. Xampp is a windows only program. I already use wamp in windows so that's not my issue.

theodorejsalvo:
http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin doesn't work I already tried that. I'll look into those folders in the morning it's nearly 1.30am over here.  Thanks to everyone so far for your comments.

Do and ifconfig in the morning and look for your IP, then use that instead.  If that still doesn't work, then let's look at the apache.conf and see what's configured, and make sure that directory exists.

Good night.

Ok the www directory is in var/www and phpmyadmin folder is etc/phpmyadmin

ServerRoot "/etc/apache2"

I know what my IP address is but if I type in http://127.0.0.1 it is the same result as http://localhost and the same as using my IP instead of 127.0.0.1

Now we know where the www directory is so how can I take ownership of that?  This does not work...
chmod 0777 var/www
It is not allowed
There must be a simple way to get phpmyadmin running. Don't forget, it's already installed!

IanTh:  What is a host file and where is my ubuntu box?  How do I setup a URL to point to a directory I can actually use? This is frustrating, I could have written a website by now lol.

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-07-31 at 14:54:25ID: 24992754

I think I found the answer to phpmyadmin. All I have to do is add the line
Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to the apache2.conf and it should run. Problem is, although I own this piece of pooh computer I don't have permission to save the file ARG!

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-07-31 at 15:44:47ID: 31610133

Thanks. That link worked. I had to create a launcher on my desktop for root access. The command line was gksudo nautilus
Now I can open any folder and change the contants. I added the 'Include' line as suggested in that link and was able to save the apache2.conf file. Now it all runs smoothly. If I could only remember my admin login details lol. Thanks again

are you using su mode (super user)

by: IanThPosted on 2009-08-01 at 05:17:23ID: 24995026

if you using a ubuntu server the localhost or 127.0.0.1 will not work you need to point it to the ip address of your ubuntu box

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-08-01 at 14:01:36ID: 24996628

IanTh.  Just a quick thought. I know you mean well but please try and read the original question - then read the entire thread (don't worry about reading through peoples code) before you post things like you just did.

You ask:   if you using a ubuntu server
My first 5 words in my post was :   I have installed Ubuntu desktop

Why would you ask if I'm using the server version?
Localhost does work with the desktop version. Like I said, I have it solved now. I also asked earlier to explain what the heck a Ubuntu Box was?  No expalanation but you said I needed to point it to the IP of my ubuntu box.

Thanks for your input however, I do appreciate it but please read the questions before making statements ok.

'i have installed ubuntu desktop'
Yes where? you cannot install it on a windows pc but you can install it through vmware or virtual pc or on an seperate pc thats why I asked. Using localhost to access it means its installed locally so it doesn't make sense to me to use ubuntu desktop on top of windows as its a os not an application please explain.

Before I stated using xammp ( I said wamp in a earlier post lol ) I used an really old pc for a ubuntu server with apache2, php5 , mysql, phpmyadmin installed and working as a test web server at home. However then I found xammp and installed that on my web dev laptop now I have apache2, php5, mysql, phpmyadmin locally.

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-08-02 at 14:40:43ID: 25000657

Ok I'll explain it again. I have a laptop with one fixed drive running xp professional and on that drive I have wamp server2.0 running and it runs very good. Everything works on it and I have developed many websites using php and mysql. I don't have a problem with using it or how it runs other than windows is a bit slow due to the amount of applications I use. This is where Ubuntu comes in.

I have an external 80gig hard drive I was using for storage but never really used it. So, as it's plugged into a USB port, I can boot from it on my system so I installed Ubuntu on that external drive (not on my main drive). When I boot I get a dual boot menu created by the ubuntu installation. So when I choose Ubuntu, it boots to the external drive. Now I have instaslled LAMPSERVER on that drive and I can type in http://localhost and as long as there is a file in the var/www directory it will run so localhost has zero (nothing) to do with windows. I know everybody dissagrees but it works just fine so you are wrong about that. The only problems I was having was how to get phpmyadmin to run on my Ubuntu system. I figured it out as I stated above.

I can't seem to get into it because I type in my admin login details and it won't accept them so I can even log onto the bloody thing ! Anyway, I hope that has cleared this thread up and got rid of the missunderstanding we have had. Have a nice day buddy.

by: IanThPosted on 2009-08-03 at 07:21:15ID: 25004555

yes it does I use wammp because I use dreamweaver, flash, photoshop in vista and xammp is my local test server
you mean you are using linux to develop php not windows

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-08-03 at 17:52:11ID: 25009761

Yes I am using both windows to develope with wamp server and linux with lamp server. I can't this any other way to make it clearer. When I am booted into Linux (UBUNTU) there IS NO WINDOWS or wamp running so localhost still runs fine.

When I am booted into windows, I am using wamp serv er and there is no linux or lampserver running, in fact I can't even see the usb drive it is installed on because of the file system.

Anyway, I'm all out of ideas on this one

by: IanThPosted on 2009-08-04 at 03:13:56ID: 25011982

why do you need to do that xammp works fine as a test web server for me in vista and I have an online subdomain on a mates fasthost reseller account that I use to show my clients progress

why do you need to develop in linux specifically

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-08-04 at 06:10:34ID: 25013265

Ian I want to develop in Linux because I want to. No other reason really. I have windows but why not try other things? It's called taking ones blinkers off and thinking outside the box. I do an awful lot of web design stuff with powerful graphics applications in windows and I was looking for a clean boot into a non windows system so I could develop only. Windows strangles ones computers but I still use it cause I have to. Linux is brand new to me so I see it as a chance to step away from the 2 million processes that windows forces you to run and use something nice and clean. Besides I like the look of Ubuntu a lot better than windows. Reminds me of apple in a way.  I am a master in the windows area so I know quite a bit, including the fact I'm sick of it <G>

Go on, try something new man!

by: IanThPosted on 2009-08-04 at 06:24:53ID: 25013417

I setup ubuntu too, the server version on a really old pc (486sx!) with apache, mysql, php5 , phpadmin etc
thats why I got confussed because it was on a seperate ip address so localhost for phpadmin wouldn't work it was a different ip address as it was a seperate pc. I agree I really liked the way ubuntu updates work thats what I used to install apache, php and mysql.

Ubuntu makes linux look good have you tried any onther distro I tried various distro's for instance redhat before as I couldn't get lamp working on ubuntu and all the others looked so out of date with ubuntu so I went back to ubuntu and found a guide on how to build a ubuntu web server online instead of using lamp

by: elvin66Posted on 2009-08-04 at 12:20:57ID: 25017200

The only other one I have looked at was Ubuntu sever version 9.04 but after I installed it, I quickly realised it is not a GUI application and for me to learn a new language from the ground up would take time I don't have, so I reformatted and installed the desktop version. I did see their are different desktop packages out there. Some even look like vista but why would I want to create another feel like windows when I'm trying to get away from it?  I like the look and feel of Ubuntu desktop and I have managed to setup most things on it so far. As for developing on it, I still have not been able to log onto phpmyadmin yet cause I forgot the username and password but once I get in, I'll start using it.

by: IanThPosted on 2009-08-05 at 02:38:53ID: 25021496

I was only using server version for a test web server not fo developing
