help parsing top in a php script

Hello,
I am trying to parse top so that i can validate particular fields.
the problem i am having is that both top and ps -ef padd with spaces to make the display even

for example i have replaced the spaces with ~

~~434~root~~~~~~10~~-5~~~~~0~~~~0~~~~0~S~~0.0~~0.0~~~1:02.66~kjournald~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So as you can see the spaces are variable

so i was thinking of taking the string in a loop , looking for the occurrence of two ~~ and keep replacing ~~ with ~ in a loop

i am thinking there has to be a more elegant solution, which is why i am posting

Would this be of any help?  Here is an example with one line that removes all the ~ for example and adds one space per.

Change the ~ to a space when you use it in your strings.
