How to enable my form users to enter apostrophes?

Hello. I have a simple form that accepts a users first name and last name. If the user's last name has an apostrophe, my form information will not save into my database.

Example: O'Sullivan > will not save into the DB
Example2: OSullivan > will save into the DB

I've heard of the addslashes() function but do not know how to envoke it properly. Anyone have an idea on how to do this, when processing my form data?
