can you upload your php.ini file? either one locally or the global one or both.

I am on an older system, (can not really upgrade it)
i have created a simple php file
[root@homer php]# cat hw.php
<?php
echo "hello world\n";
?>
when i run it i get
[root@homer php]# php hw.php
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.2.2
Content-type: text/html
hello world
on my other servers i do not get the Content-type: text/html
is this because i am using such and old version of php?

No, this is because it is sending header output.
Try adding this to your php.ini:
expose_php = Off
(also remove any expose_php *** you might already have)
