How to populated form dropdown list with php from mysql database

Hello,

I'm having difficulties getting a php form to get populated with data from mysql database

I think i've got the connection properly, the server calculated the code for php, i have the database created, user added with all the priviliges, pass...etc...

Other php code on the page also works perfectly.

But with this I get code displayed on where the dropdown menu should appear.

Cant seem to get it right, no matter what I do? Always the broken code appears in the form instead of the dropdown list....

mysql_select_db(database name); // here I insert name of the database that contains the table, right?

$sql = "SELECT column_name FROM table"; // do I have to insert table name like table.sql or just the table name or database.tablename.column_name???
// Some tutorials out there also add ID column, is that absolutely necessary? What is the point of that? I only have 1 column that i wish displayed so
from my naive point of logic there shouldnt be any need for complicating with ID column.
