Migrating phpbb 2 to 3; best approach?

I'm running phpbb2.0 with 150,000+ posts. The forum is customized to suit the theme of the entire site.

I would like to customize phpbb3.0's design so it looks like the customized version of phpbb2.0.

I'm wondering what the best approach is?

first would be what style do you want to base it off of, prosilver (default for phpbb3, all mods must have instructions for this style) or subsilver2(other version supplied with main package but not default, nor any mods required to provide edits for this style)

Apologies if my question is unclear.

To add, my issue is not so much customizing phpbb3.0 design but rather the process of upgrading from 2 to 3.

For example, is it best to install v3 on a test folder, customize it, save the customized files, and then reinstall v3 over the top of v2.  Once reinstalled, I imagine I could then drop the customized files over the top of it.

Or, is there an easier way to go about this?
