Question

Check this weirdness out...

Asked by: weaponX

OK please copy the code below and make it an .htm and run it....if you leave the code exactly the way it is, it produces the results I want....

but if you will please have a stare at this line:

<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;>

(I will put a large amt of whitespace around it when I paste the actual code...)

but do you notice that my syntax is wrong?

the opening quote does not get closed...
<div style="visibility...

should end with ">

but ends with > instead

if I close the quotes, my alignment gets shot ALL outta wack

if I remove the one unclosed quote, same thing...

Please tell me why my code only works when I leave the single quote unclosed in my div tag...

this is very weird to me, if I would not have made this error, my code would never work...

so what I mean is...

this line works (original flawed code):
<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;>

this line does not work (closing quote added):
<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;">

this line also does not work (unclosed quote removed):
<div style=visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;>

Please try it yourself and tell me why this weirdness is occurring....Thanks

instead of:-

Heya, i just tried it out and it looks as though your simply setting the pixels to far to the left! try 200 instead of 400!

<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:200px">

does the trick for me!

i.e. there is nothing wrong with the code it just isn't acting as you think (incorrectly think i might add - development is like that - you cant see the wood for the trees!

P.S. You may want to revise the amount of the <center> tag that you are using.
P.P.S. Hope this helps.

P.S. Here is a bit of code i tidied up a bit (took a lot of center tags and stuff out - although you may want to realign things.

I'm not looking for a way to rewrite the code persay...

I'm simply trying to find out why this faulted line of code works how I want it to...

So, I got this line missing a quote...but my alignment is perfect...I know why it shifts when I fix it...but I can't figure out why it works when I leave it...

>>i.e. there is nothing wrong with the code it just isn't acting as you think (incorrectly think i might add - development is like that - you cant see the wood for the trees!

but there was something wrong with the code...

<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;>

This line is missing the closing "

why is it producing the results I want???

it should look like  this:

<div style="visibility: visible; position: absolute; top:53px; left:400px;">

see now it has a closing "

but it don't run right

your way works with some tweaking, but my way works with an improperly closed set of quotes...

I just wanna know why it works when that line is not right, and why would fixing or deleting that line make it fail if that line was funky from the beginning?

Any thoughts?

You will most likely get these points since noOne else is interested...but I really would like to know why this occurs.

Without large amounts of testing and an in-depth knowledge of how div tags are interpreted at the browser - it seems that...

at first i removed some of the center tags - leaving the div tag in error - and the div align was being affected by them - you are not spcifying div alignments, rather you are relying mainly on individual element alignments!

often the case in computing is that two wrongs make a right :-)

P.S. try removing all other alignments from the page and then see the outcome.

P.P.S. Something i've learnt in the industry, with time pressures etc, is that if it works - dont fix it!

P.P.P.S. Notice that if you use an editor that interprets code - e.g. DreamWeaver MX then it does think your page is in error! it knows there is an unfinished double quote and discolours the rest of the page!
