The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

streaming media (.m3u - .mp3) inside a password-protected directory

Asked by mattursin in Web Languages/Standards

Hello,
I am trying to create streaming .mp3 files inside a password protected directory on my website's server. I used .m3u files because I've had easy success with that before in regular 'unprotected' areas on my sites, but when I link to a .m3u in my protected directory, I get prompted to enter my password a second time, ok - that's no problem - but the problem is; when I tried clicking the .m3u from a few different computers than my own, it opened the media player, but it did not play the file, nor did it prompt for the password to be entered a second time like it did on my own computer. The media player showed the file name of the .m3u, but it did not play. I tried clicking the play button too but it did nothing. The media player being used on those other computers that did not play the files is the "MusicMatch" program. Do you know if it could be some settings or preference on that media player that could be changed to play an .mp3 from a protected directory?
Or is there a problem with using .m3u files in protected areas?
Is there another better way to stream .mp3 files? Or is linking to the .m3u the best way? (I really am avoiding using anything to do with 'realaudio' by-the-way) I considered using Flash, but I am not very proficient with that program yet (still learning). But if THAT would be a better option, maybe you could give me some tips there.
Any suggestions would be much appriciated - Thank you in advance!
-Matt
