Question

How do I draw a line(not straight) with dhtml?

Asked by: bjawnie

Hii,

I'm trying to get a script that can be used with a start position and an end position to draw a straight line between these coordinates.

I've already looked at http://www.walterzorn.com/jsgraphics/jsgraphics_e.htm and it seem to do the job just fine, but I don't want all that extra code for all the other functions.

Cheers

If you want only a line use :
<hr style="border:solid 1px black"/>

If you want to draw complex graphics , use VML or SVG .
(search in google for both topics you'll find all the info you need).

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:16:31ID: 8454058

Hii,

I need to be able to use coordinates like A = x1,y1 and B = x2,y2.

So my line starts at A and ends at B. Not necessarily a horizontal or vertical line.

What is VML / SVG and do all browsers support them.

Cheers
bjawnie

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:30:43ID: 8454092

bjawnie, if need more complex graphics then straight lines, DHTML is just not the way, although you might be able to find workarounds, it will be complicated and will probably have different performances and cross-browser support issues.

VML as of now is supproted by IE only (example : http://www.xtls.de/vml-3d/example1.htm , http://www.beakermedia.com/dhtml/vml_02.htm)

SVG is depended on an adobe-plugin (just like flash) and is supported by both browsers (http://www.diversitas.org/diversitas.org/round_svg.php)

hmmm...

looks interesting. What program is used to make svg?

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:47:23ID: 8454111

Both (VML and SVG) are simple XML , no need for any external program (notepad will do just fine).

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:49:48ID: 8454113

for real?

Are you good at it? Could you tell me how to make a single line in SVG for instance :o)

Cheers
bjawnie

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:52:44ID: 8454117

No. I never done any SVG.
But it's very simple to learn (as it's XML , everything is very much straight forward :

Here is a single line code :

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>
<svg width="400" height="300">
<line x1="100" y1="30" x2="350" y2="280"
style="stroke :#00FF00; stroke-width :3 ;
stroke-opacity :0.4;"/>
</svg>

Save in file as "filname.svg" and load in mozilla or IE .

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 02:56:41ID: 8454120

All I see is some XML code.

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:00:08ID: 8454134

Test it localy, your web-server needs to be updated to support mime-type for SVG .

If I save your file to my machine then load it locally it works perfect so the problem is the sent mime-type.

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:06:12ID: 8454151

Ah, this seems like a good solution but there is way to much to change, update and learn.

I think I'll just drop it

ThanX anyway

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:08:12ID: 8454154

bjawnie, As a final solution , you can always work with images.

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:10:48ID: 8454165

?+?

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:12:29ID: 8454169

Just design your lines as an Image save it to a file, then load it into the HTML page... what is the question here ?

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:14:51ID: 8454175

Yeah, but I was planning to dynamical produce the lines with ASP, so...

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:17:02ID: 8454179

Yeah, it won't be dynamic when simple images are used.

If you have any additional issues, feel free to post.

by: bjawniePosted on 2003-05-04 at 03:20:16ID: 8454184

sure thing, thanX

Also there's a similar way to do what anver say, it's something like a html implemented with xml, so your server don't need extra mime-types. Here's a sample:
<html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml">
<head>
<object id="VMLRender" classid="CLSID:10072CEC-8CC1-11D1-986E-00A0C955B42E">
</object>
<style>
v\:* { behavior: url(#VMLRender); }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<v:line from="10 20" to="40 150" opacity="1.0" stroke="true" strokecolor="black" strokeweight="1" fill="true" fillcolor="white" print="true" />
</body>
</html>

You can modify it dinamically with javascript. Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/mind/0100/VML/VML.asp also posted by anver), I learn from there to use that it's attributes and other forms to create.
Hope that help

Hii,

Does this work with netscape?

ThanX

by: voskPosted on 2003-05-05 at 06:03:11ID: 8461536

I don't know if the latest NSN versions support that (v4.5 don't).
To do something like that supported by all browsers you can use Flash MX (also change dinamically the position and appearance), but I still think that vml is the best way to do something like that.

by: avnerPosted on 2003-05-05 at 06:04:53ID: 8461550

No. it will not be supported under any Mozilla version as it will not support this ActiveX .

by: voskPosted on 2003-05-05 at 06:16:10ID: 8461614

Althought the answer to the question is no way, unless bjawnie want to work with a lot of code:
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<div id="a" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="b" style="position:absolute;top:1;left:1;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="c" style="position:absolute;top:2;left:2;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="d" style="position:absolute;top:3;left:3;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="e" style="position:absolute;top:4;left:4;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="f" style="position:absolute;top:5;left:5;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>

<div id="l" style="position:absolute;top:11;left:11;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="c" style="position:absolute;top:12;left:12;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>

<div id="e" style="position:absolute;top:14;left:14;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="f" style="position:absolute;top:15;left:15;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="g" style="position:absolute;top:16;left:16;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="h" style="position:absolute;top:17;left:17;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="i" style="position:absolute;top:18;left:18;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
<div id="j" style="position:absolute;top:19;left:19;z-index:1;width:1;height:1;background-color:#000000;font-size:1"></div>
</body>
</html>
And I still not sure about if new NSN versions can set the position absolute.

Regarding vosk's last comment : "And I still not sure about if new NSN versions can set the position absolute"

The answer is "ofcourse yes" , Mozilla has much better CSS support then IE as of now.
