Text Width - Can string S fit in cell X? (ASP)

I have developed a web front end to our VB scheduling app, that displays booking information in a table. The table is fixed at "100%" width, and shows from 7am to 12am. Each hour has 4 1/4 hour cells.

We work out how long each booking is, and calculate how many 1/4 hour cells it will require to be drawn correctly.

All of this works very well.

The problem we are having is that if the title of the booking is too long to fit in the COLSPAN cell, the cell stretches.

In our VB version, we use the .TextWidth feature to check to see if the text fits in to the picture, and keep chopping a character off, until it fits.

Is there a way of doing this in ASP/HTML?

If necessary, I suppose even JavaScript will be okay, although its not exactly my speciality.

If possible, please give a full code example.

I have uploaded a screenshot of the problem. You will notice how each hour has a different width, distorting the timeline.
