I am guessing he want to be able to administer it himself and be able to add/remove/modify products easily. There are many out there. What is the price range is he looking for? And when you say 10,000+, is it also 20,000+? A range would be helpful to provide you with a more accurate solution.
Good luck,

Seriously check out the new Yahoo stores for small business. They just totally re-vamped the system and it works awesome. Its made for exactly what your looking to do. You can very easily upload your entire catalog using a "catalog manager" wizard and a spreadsheet catalog. They just launched this about 3 weeks ago and so far its really pretty neat. You get an entire system for a fixed price and its very easy to use as a developer.

There's the link to the main info page...look into it further. I use it for a smaller product line, but I believe it can work well with any number of products.

Phil
