How to change my site description result on search engines

Hi Experts.

I have a new website and now search engines like google and msn give only this line of description of my site:" mysite homepage "
although I changed the <meta content="****" name="description" />
to reflect the new description that i would like these search engines to list.. but nothing is changing..
I guess I changed this a week ago.

can anyone explain to me the process here .. how much time these engines will take to list my new site description ?
