Yes, any camera will do depending on how it interfaces with your computer. Many cameras use USB to be used as a webcam. I'd recommend using a camera that can zoom - otherwise your footage of the surfers may be too small to be useful.
ustream.tv offers free streaming. I'm not sure about the time limits but there's also paid membership. ustream will give you code for embedding in your site. It's pretty simple and I use it myself to broadcast meetings.
