Question

Need help formating Google Calendar Feed with Feedburner

Asked by: Razzmataz73

Good morning,
I have a Google Calendar feed which I am running through Feedburner/Buzzboost to output to my webpage:
http://www.viyachts.com/bareboats/cyoa/specials.php

It currently displays the events like:
----
Save $300 on 10+ nights: CYOA Sailing Yachts
When: Sun Dec 20, 2009 to Mon Jan 4, 2010

Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Not combinable with any other discounts.
----

I want to make is so the  "Save $300 on 10+ nights: CYOA Sailing Yachts" is not a link.
And the words "When", "Event Description" are not displayed (just the info) and the "Event Status" does not display at all.

Thanks

I don't have a sample of the feed from the Calendar or details on how it really looks coming from the burner but it probably wouldn't be too hard to modify the content they send.  How do you provide the feed on your page?  If it uses their code then that can be a problem (i.e. you can't modify code or content on an other domain/server).  Also what does it look like exactly (i.e. not the look on the web page but the html or source)?

Do the sites allow you to modify the feeds?  Not just the burner site that send the output but the original source too.  Some prohibit it.

I put the Google Calendar link through Feedburner and then it gives me this code to put on the page.
I don't care if I we need to use another solution other then feedburner as long as I can use Google Calendar, so if there are other solutions I am open to them.

And here is a sample of what the attached code spits out on my page:
Low Season Rates + 10 nights for the price of 7: CYOA Sailing Yachts
When: Sun Oct 25, 2009 to Tue Dec 15, 2009

Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Not combinable with any other discounts.

We would like to totally get rid of "Event Status: confirmed "

Thanks for the response.  Since you are using a script from another domain you are limited in what you can do with its output.  Feedburner seems to offer some customizing options via the URL but none will do all you wanted.  There are details of the options at http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78991 .

In order to get the content as you want you will either need to find another site to send you the feed or get the info yourself (if it is available and something you can "read" from the site).  If the CYOA site is the one that is the source of the feed you should first check to see if the feed is public and if you can use and manipulate it (i.e. look to see if their "terms of use" allows it).  If so then does your server allow you to use a server language (e.g.  PHP, .NET, ASP)?  If so which?  Using those you can often get the feed and then your server could put the info in the format you want.  More work than having a "burner" do it for you but it would give you the control over the formatting you seem to want.

Let me know how this helps or if you have a question.

Yes,
We have our own server through Rackspace.
It has PHP on it.
Can you give me some sample code on how to format a google calender feed through code?

Can anyone help with this or should I just close out the question?

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I just haven't had the time to try to get a Google feed and then look at PHP to format it.  If you can provide a sample of the feed you would get from Google and the URL you use then I can try to help with the PHP to get it and parse it (i.e. format it as you want).

Is this not doable?

It should be doable (assuming there is no issue with "terms of use" manipulating the content of the feed or xml).  The URLs were even helpful.  In order to make the PHP though I need to go to the sites and look at the page's/feed's contents.  Then make the php to parse the "code", get what you need, and then put it in the format you need.  I still just haven't had time to do all those things.  If you can provide the specific xml for a feed/url you know is OK to "manipulate" then it may be easier for me to just make the php to get the contents you want (and format them as you want).  Next week I may have time for all of it but side projects keep coming up and other things that cut in to my EE time (especially for a single question "project").

Sorry.  I do hope this response helps though.  As long as the sites will let  you use script to get the info and allow you to modify it for your use then I see no reason you can't do it.  You should check on that though because many sites have a "terms of use" type page that prohibits scripts and things like that from "scraping" the site.  In those cases, even when they provide a feed, they want you to use it as is.
