Question

Invalid document end

Asked by: Dracan

Hi.  I'm using PEAR SOAP to send a request to Amazon to query our product order data.

Amazon is returning the correct data, but the xml_parse call in SOAP's Parser.php is failing saying:

"Error: XML error on line 2 col 1 byte 527 Invalid document end".

The returned raw response that xml_parse is trying to parse is below.  Obviously I can get the code to ignore the error return value and just query the reponse using client->getLastResponse().  But I'd rather fix this so that it's working properly.

I'm fairly new to SOAP, so the answer might be blindingly obvious to someone with more experience in this.

Thanks for any help,
Dan.

does your SOAP end with "--xxx-WASP-CPP-MIME-Boundary-xxx-0xb33488b-03b83b48-xxx-END-xxx--"?

if so ... that won't work.  SOAP is not MIME.

everything needs to be inside the SOAP-ENV:BODY tag

The bit I put in the code snippet is what was returned by Amazon (ie. what's returned when I called client->getLastResponse() after getting the SOAP error.  It's not what I generated on my side.

Is that part an attachment?

I'm not sure what you mean by attachment.
SOAP does not have attachments.
It's an XML wrapper/transmission protocol.

There's quite a few results when doing a google regarding SOAP attachments (eg. http://www.w3.org/TR/SOAP-attachments).  And looking at the PEAR SOAP code, there's reference to attachments in there.  Unfortunately, the PEAR SOAP library seems to be reading the attachment part of the data Amazon returned into the $xml variable instead of realising that it's an attachment :-(

yeah that definitely looks like what is happening on the php side.

are you using the nuSOAP library or the integrated one from PHP 5?

it seems like you are going to want to use this function if using the native PHP:
http://us3.php.net/manual/en/soapclient.dorequest.php

by using
$soap_client->__doRequest

you can change the way the document is handled.

also, be aware that the most recent PHP (5.3) has some issues in its soap implementation that have caused most people to roll back to 5.2 for their live projects.

I'm using PEAR SOAP (http://pear.php.net/package/SOAP).  Is that what you mean by integrated one?  The version on my server seems to be identical to the latest on the webpage.

I'm only using PHP 5.26.  However, I may have updated PEAR SOAP manually a few months ago when playing around with SOAP for another reason - not 100% sure though.

I've not seen the SoapClient class before that you mentioned.  The PEAR SOAP seems to use a class called SOAP_Client.

I think I'm best just ignoring the error, and calling SOAP_Client::getLastResponse and manually parsing what Amazon returns.

Dracan -- that would be about the same as using the doRequest method only you wouldn't be having to catch an exception.

You're the second person to mention using pear SOAP in as many weeks here.  But there's a native PHP soap extension that has been more recently worked on than the one in PEAR.

by: DracanPosted on 2009-10-13 at 12:50:08ID: 25563712

I'll check that out then :-)  The main reason I wanted to stick with PEAR is because the code's already been written, and I'm in a bit of a hurry to get this working.  Looking at those docs though - it won't be a biggie to switch over.

Thanks a lot for your help with this.
