Question

'style' is null or not an object error in IE

Asked by: adrian_brooks

Hello folks,

I have googled this issue to death and am sort of hitting dead ends and could use some help.

I'll attempt to be as clear and concise and possible.
I have a page that lists rows of products (shopping cart style).
The 'Add To Cart' link then calls the window opener (please note that the window is a prototype window.js pseudo-window...a div made to look like a window) and opens the window in modal mode.
The pseudo-window opens just fine in FF, but in IE 6 & 7, both report the error 'style' is null or not an object and the pseudo-window sort of appears in IE 7, but on IE 6, you can't see it even though it is still there.

I tried to locate the offending tag, but as you all know, IE STILL has yet to come up with a code viewer that is not freaking notepad based. The best I could trace was line 2272, where it was reporting the error as coming from was a <td style="vertical-align:top">

Anyway, I have no clue why this is happening in IE only. I found a few articles that suggest wrapping the HTML in the pseudo-window in a DTD header...still, no luck.

Can anyone please help with this?

Hello again Kravimir,

Thanks again for the response. I have removed the .htaccess directory protection on the subdomain for the duration of this question and will reactivate it after completed here as this is a development subdom.

The URL for the page is http://rik.kmshooting.com/index.php?pg=14

If you click on any of the black boxes with the '+' symbol in them, you will see what I am referring to. In Firefox, this all works just fine, but in IE...it falls on it's face.

Thanks!

The problem seems to be the _checkIEOverlapping function, which is only used in IE.

Try changing

  _checkIEOverlapping: function() {
    if(!this.iefix && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('MSIE')>0) && (navigator.userAgent.indexOf('Opera')<0) && (this.element.getStyle('position')=='absolute')) {

to

  _checkIEOverlapping: function() {
    if(!this.iefix && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('MSIE')>0) && (navigator.userAgent.indexOf('Opera')<0) && (this.element.nodeName=='DIV') && (this.element.getStyle('position')=='absolute')) {

Kravimir, thank you for your extensive involvement!

I'm assuming that you were to have me make this change in the window.js file, correct?

If so, I did that and IE 6 & 7 present the same error.

Perhaps it is a different call to getStyle that is causing the problem. I couldn't be sure which one it was because the MS Script Debugger (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2f465be0-94fd-4569-b3c4-dffdf19ccd99&displaylang=en) keeps crashing IE7 on me while I'm trying to debug this, and that seemed like the most likely one since this bug seems to only appear in IE.

On the other hand, you could clear your browser cache (temp internet files) to make sure that IE isn't using an older cached version of that script. If you use the IE Developer Toolbar to do it, then you can restrict it to clear just the files for that domain. Hmm... upon further testing it seems I was wrong. It now looks like the problem is in the first getOffsetParent function in prototype.js

Try changing

  getOffsetParent: function(element) {
    if (element.offsetParent) return $(element.offsetParent);
    if (element == document.body) return $(element);

to

  getOffsetParent: function(element) {
    if (element.offsetParent) return $(element.offsetParent);
    if ((element == document.body) || (element.nodeName.toLowerCase() == 'html')) return $(element);

Kravimir...you're help is truly worth 10000 points here!...that most definitely resolved the error.

Go have a look at the page now in IE 6 if you can and you will see that it's not displaying correctly...otherwise, this is perfect!!!

It's working great in FF & IE 7 now as opposed to before.

You seriously are worth your weight in gold for your expertise!

IE 6 is truly proving to be a real pain in the posterior.

If you can help me resolve this last issue, I would like your permission to submit your fix to the window.js authors with you as the person that discovered this fix.

It's very difficult to find the problem in a huge script like that when no error is being reported. I suggest you comment out all the script elements except the ones needed to open that to see if there is a conflict somewhere.

> I would like your permission to submit your fix to the window.js authors with you as the person that discovered this fix.

Sure. I'm happy to contribute to open source JavaScript projects.

Thank you very sincerely for going above & beyond the call to help!
