Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Incorrect format of XML

Hi

I have created an output file of XML from MS SQL Server using the FOR XML EXPLICIT clause. However it is not being imported correctly into a third party app. When I try and open the XML file in a Web browser I get "XML Parsing Error: not well-formed" from Firefox and "The XML page cannot be displayed" in IE.

When I execute my query in Query Analyzer I can see the issue; it is exporting the output in long  rows not correctly formatted with tags. Hence when it comes to parse the XML it is finding line ends not associated with the tags.

I found this explination on the net "ODBC, which is used by Query Analyzer, does not handle the FOR XML clause. It returns the data in 4K rows which, allowing for overhead and double-byte character set (DBCS), comes to 2033 characters." but using the suggested solution of  setting DBCC TRACEON(257) does not format the output correctly see below:
