The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Converting XML to HTML
Tags: xml, html, converting
Hi All,

I have a program here that is spitting out reports from our spam system into XML.

The spam system is Vamsoft ORF (free trial available) -> http://www.vamsoft.com

The XML Generator is available here -> http://www.vamsoft.com/orf/osg.zip

Basically, it spits out the following -> http://www.ee-stuff.com/Expert/Upload/getFile.php?fid=4340

Rename that file to XML and you will see what I mean.

I don't really need all the information, but I would like to find a way to rip out that parts that are useful, and generally sex it up a bit :)

Thanks

The easiest way to convert XML to XML or to HTML is to use XSL stylesheets. You simply process the XML-file with any program that can process stylesheets (browsers can, and xsltproc (*nix and Mac) and XMLSpy (Windows).

For example, the following is a stylesheet that does some conversion:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
      <xsl:output method="html"/>
      <!-- process the root node -->
      <xsl:template match="/">
            <ul>
                  <!-- now, process the nodes for /statistics/beforearrival/senderblacklist and /statistics/beforearrival/senderwhitelist -->
                  <xsl:apply-templates select ="/statistics/beforearrival/senderblacklist"/>
                  <xsl:apply-templates select ="/statistics/beforearrival/senderwhitelist"/>
            </ul>
      </xsl:template>
      <!-- processing instruction for /statistics/beforearrival/senderblacklist -->
      <xsl:template match="/statistics/beforearrival/senderblacklist">
            <li>The sender blacklist availability is <b>"<xsl:value-of select="available"/>"</b>. There were <xsl:value-of select="tests"/> tests performed, with <xsl:value-of select="hits"/> hits.</li>
      </xsl:template>
      <!-- processing instruction for /statistics/beforearrival/senderwhitelist -->
      <xsl:template match="/statistics/beforearrival/senderwhitelist">
            <li>The sender whitelist availability is <b>"<xsl:value-of select="available"/>"</b>. There were <xsl:value-of select="tests"/> tests performed, with <xsl:value-of select="hits"/> hits.</li>
      </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

When I run this through my stylesheet processor with the file you uploaded:

powerbook:~/Desktop/Safari Downloaded Files miep$ xsltproc stats.xsl stats.xml
<ul>
<li>The sender blacklist availability is <b>"No"</b>. There were 0 tests performed, with 0 hits.</li>
<li>The sender whitelist availability is <b>"Yes"</b>. There were 120786 tests performed, with 935 hits.</li>
</ul>

Voila!

I second that the most plausible way to get XML into HTML is by using XSLT.

I have some suggestions on how you do the transform though.

I would recommend that in this case, you use a command-line transformation.
You have three options, Xalan, Saxon or xsltproc (note that xsltproc is also available on windows)
I recommend Saxon.
Here is a page that explains how to install and use all three of them
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/InstallingAProcessor.html
I just checked, it is pretty up-to-date, though Saxon is at 6.5.5 for XSLT1 and XSLT2 is a full recommendation now, so Saxon8B is pretty stable.
All these processors work on most platforms and are free of charge.

If you like an IDE, there are two decent options
www.stylusstudio.com (windows only)
www.oxygenxml.com (all platforms, macintosh inclusive)
They both allow hand-picking your processor easily. Oxygen is somewhat cheaper and likely perfect for the job.

I don't recommend using a browser for your task
You have to either add a processing instruction to your XML
or add some javascript in  a page to get it done
here is the process instruction you need to add to the xml
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="myxsl.xsl"?>
you can then view the resulting html directly in the browser

But again, I would go for command line processing

cheers

Thanks for the responses folks,

Is there a way that this can be done in a single web page, without anything else being installed on the server.  Running the script on a schedule is acceptable, but if a single web page that uses the separate XML could be created, that would be ideal.

I appreciate that a web browser is not the best thing for dealing the XML, but I would like something that is standalone.

Thanks

well, browsers have XSLT processors
If you can find a way to put this line
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="myxsl.xsl"?>
between the xml declaration
<?xml version...
and the first tag,
the transformation will take place whilst you open the file for viewing in a browser

some simple regex could do that for you
note that you can add a relative path to the XSLT file in the href "attribute"

The XML file output cannot really be modified. Is there a way of calling everything in a single page, like an include in asp page and then use a CSS file to format the text?

I would like to be able to have a single URL that the users can access directly, rather than relying on some kind of link (If I have understood what you have written correctly)?

Thanks

Red,

Somewhere down the road, some program needs to know that the XML should be combined with an XSLT-stylesheet. It could be either the server or the browser.

To go for the browser option would require the injection of the processing statement in the XML somewhere, but I gather you can't do that somehow.

The server option is the easiest /sweetest. You could simply install a XSLT-converter that you reference by URL. For example, on one of my servers, we server bookdata. The URL for the bookdata is http://www.servername.com/ISBN where ISBN is a ISBN-number. The server knows that for that kind of URL, it should look up the ISBN in a database, convert it using a XSLT-stylesheet and show the result to the user.

How this would be implemented on your site depends on many factors: your operating system, type of server, the options you have to install components, your own expertise, etc. But it can be done quite easily by someone who knows what they're doing.

that doesn't leave us with too many options
.... so what is there on the server we can use?

Is there ASP on the server? If there is, you could pull in the XML in the ASP,
transform it using the XSLT and show the resulting HTML.
If that is possible, I will post the JavaScript you need

You could view the XML with CSS, but then again you need to add an xml-stylesheet processing instruction

let's first go for ASP
Here is the ASP you need to show an html, given the xml and xsl file
<% @Language = "JAVASCRIPT" %>
<html>
    <head><title>YourTitle</title></head>
    <body>
<%
         var oXML = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0");
         var oXSL = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.FreeThreadedDOMDocument.4.0");
         var oTmpl= new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XSLTemplate.4.0");
         var oProc ;
         oXSL.load(Server.MapPath('stylesheet.xslt'));
         oXML.load(Server.MapPath('xmlfile.xml'));
         oTmpl.stylesheet = oXSL;
         oProc = oTmpl.createProcessor();
         oProc.input = oXML;
         oProc.transform();
         Response.Write(oProc.output);
%>
</body>
</html>

This requires msxml4 on the server (you could also make this .3.0 or .6.0 depending on what is on the server)

cheers

I like the look of that ASP, let me have a mess around and get back to you.

Thank you both very much for your time, and working within my rigid constraints.
