The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hi,
I am using the xslt below and wondered if there is a way of filtering empty elemants from the transformation, i.e. if   <xsl:value-of select="address_line1"/> is empty remove from the transformation.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
    xmlns:msxsl="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt" exclude-result-prefixes="msxsl">

<xsl:template match="response/rows/row">
  <xsl:value-of select="house_no/><br />
  <xsl:value-of select="address_line1"/><br />
  <xsl:value-of select="address_line2"/><br />
  <xsl:value-of select="address_line3"/><br />
  <xsl:value-of select="county"/><br />
  <xsl:value-of select="post_code"/><br />
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

Many Thanks

that works but it returns everything that is returned in my query, in this case I only need to display the elements shown in the original xslt. Is that possible?

05.16.2008 at 05:52AM PDT, ID: 21582211
If you just want to test that a value is present before you do something, you can use the if structure:

<xsl:if test="house_no">
    <xsl:value-of select="house_no"/>
</xsl:if>
<xsl:if test="address_line1">
    <xsl:value-of select="address_line1"/>
</xsl:if>

and so on.

thats what I thought, I was just hoping there was another way iinstead of having to do a test for each node.

sorry, was out at a meeting,

you should NOT have a single test per item, but use templates smartly

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
    xmlns:msxsl="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt" exclude-result-prefixes="msxsl">

<xsl:template match="response/rows/row">
  <xsl:apply-templates select="house_no/><br />
  <xsl:apply-templates select="address_line1"/><br />
  <xsl:apply-templates select="address_line2"/><br />
  <xsl:apply-templates select="address_line3"/><br />
  <xsl:apply-templates select="county"/><br />
  <xsl:apply-templates select="post_code"/><br />
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="row/*[not(string-length(.) = 0)]">
<xsl:value-of select="."/><br />
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="row/*[string-length(.) = 0]"/>
</xsl:stylesheet>

This is untested, but should give you the idea.

There was a bug in my previous comment in that you need to remove the <br/> after each apply-templates

If the order is fixed, it is even easier...

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
    xmlns:msxsl="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt" exclude-result-prefixes="msxsl">

<xsl:template match="response/rows/row">
  <xsl:apply-templates select="house_no | address_line1 | address_line2 | address_line3 | county | post_code" />
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="row/*[not(string-length(.) = 0)]">
<xsl:value-of select="."/><br />
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="row/*[string-length(.) = 0]"/>
</xsl:stylesheet>
