xsl date format

i am trying to format the <write /> element returned by the MOSS Search. It is returning date.

i am trying to format the date using this function but
<xsl:value-of select="ms:format-date('10/16/2009', 'MMM dd, yyyy')"/> but it gives be error
"Unable to display this Web Part. To troubleshoot the problem, open this Web page in a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible HTML editor such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. If the problem persists, contact your Web server administrator."

can anyone help me out?
