How do I modify my URL using RewriteRule?

I want my URL to changed from:

http://www.site1.com.au/site2/index.htm

to

http://www.site2.com.au/index.htm

How do I do this using .htaccess?

does this go into the .htaccess file in the subdirectory (root of site2) or in the root directory of site1? It doesn't appear to be changing anything no matter where I put it

It should be placed in a .htaccess file in the root directory of site1.

OK when I put it there I get 404 errors... called web host & they say they don't allow cloaking anymore, could that be affecting things? If so not happy with web host who I pay a lot of money too!

FYI the URL rewrites perfectly, just won't display the page now.

SORRY!

I added QSA to .htaccess file which I think is causing the 404's. If I don't do that however the URL doesn't rewrite (although I can still see the site at least)

Odd. You didn't seem to be using a query string. I wonder why that option is needed.

The url rewrites when I visit the site, but it won't display the pages. I think it may be a problem with my host, then again I have no idea what I'm doing with the .htaccess code.

Perhaps the problem is that you're using frames right now. Try removing the page that contains the from when you try using that rewrite rule.
