Choose your champ. You might win.

EXPERT SHOWDOWN STARTS MONDAY, 10/24!

With more than 11 million points between them, Steve Light (slightwv) and Sean Stuber (sdstuber) are proven Oracle pros. But what happens when they go head to head in an all-out point battle?

That’s what we’re going to find out. Starting Monday, they’ll have one week to collect as many points on Experts Exchange as possible. Two will enter the ring, but only one will emerge victorious (how victorious, you ask? Check out the prize belt below).

Also, if you have any Oracle questions, this is probably the week to ask.

Win a Trophy Buckle

Think you’ve got a bead on the winner? You can play along at home. Post your favorite on Twitter by choosing #TeamSean or #TeamSteve (don’t forget to mention @ExpertsExchange). We’ll draw a name from the winner’s team…if it’s you, you’ll win an Experts Exchange trophy buckle. Granted, it won't be as epic as the winners Championship Belt, but you'll be a winner nonetheless. (official rules below)

Here are a few stats on the contestants to help you decide which team you'd like to join.

The Champion: slightwv
-  #1 Expert in Oracle
-  4,945,000 total points
-  One Genius Certificate
-  17 Certificates Overall
-  Specialty: All things Oracle

The Challenger: sdstuber
-  #2 Expert in Oracle
-  6,610,000 total points
-  Four Genius Certificates
-  20 Certifications Overall
-  Specialty: Oracle SQL and PL/SQL Development

Good luck to both of you guys!

sdstuber: unfortunately our points system is a daily update, the only way to do a running total would be manual updates. Plus, there's always the wild card at the end of users closing questions, so...I suppose we're left with best guess.

My last post while new questions in the Showdown are allowed (unless Sean never did get the times right).

Too many empties.... not enough time.  I made a valiant attempt (on killing the rest of the beer).  However I failed but tomorrow is another day!

It's been a heck of a week.  My prediction - Steve won.

I put in a lot of time and answered a lot of questions; but I stuck to my normal areas, just more of it.
He went exploring in other zones and I think it extra work paid off.

My goal was to try to keep up in questions and then surge ahead with articles.  Only problem was I only wrote 3 of them.

oh well, between the two of us I think we helped a lot of people this week, and hopefully filled the PAQ with some good stuff for future readers.

I don't think I found it as stressful as Steve did,  but I do have to say having a feeling of "I must do this"  rather than my usual "I want to do this" did suck a little bit of the fun out of it.

And, regardless of who wins this showdown...
I always have this to remember... (and now everyone else does too --- ha - I WIN!!!!!)

      Kdo,
      >>Steve -- you definitely need to work on your trash talk.  ;)

See, there was physical proof...  I was hoping it had been lost but figured it has been well guarded for some nefarious future plans.

The REALLY bad part:  That silhouette taking that is my wife!!!!

My defense:  quantities of wine were involved.

*I wonder if anyone actually buys the wine defense...*

Sean you did a great job and shouldn't feel 'slighted' in the least.

Steve - as today is Friday, Happy Hour officially started about 28 minutes ago. I'll buy the first round.

Can we get some detailed stats?

What did this effort add to the PAQ?
How many different people did we help?
      How many questions answered?
      How many posts made?
How many points/questions for each zone?
How did the race go day-to-day?
How many questions did we participate in individually vs how many together? (ignoring any hidden administrative posts we made)

Hey I'm a database guy, save some effort send me the raw data of questions/post id's/zones along with timestamps of posts and acceptance, I can generate stats myself and post them for all to see.

Thanks.  You had me running!  I honestly thought it would be closer as well.

MAN, missed round 1.  By now you are probably on like 6 or 7!  I'll need to really party hard to catch up.

      >>I can generate stats myself and post them for all to see.

Why would they provide the data to 2nd place?

I'm confident I could Google up the necessary SQL to come up with the numbers.  It might take a while to run but it will eventually run!

      HERESY!!!!!

To not have a whole number implies beer not consumed!  That is a criminal offense!

It should be a capital offense!

actually, I was rounding up from 0 not partial beers.

"If" I drink a beer at all, I'll generally have two.
Three if I'm at a bar playing trivia
Four if I'm at a bar, playing trivia, watching UFC.
Five if I'm at a bar, playing trivia, watching UFC, the fights aren't very good and my wife is driving.
Six if I'm at a bar, playing trivia, watching UFC, the fights aren't very good, I had the first few too fast and forgot how many.
Seven if I'm at a bar, playing trivia, watching UFC, the fights aren't very good, I had the first few too fast and forgot how many,
and the trivia is really easy and I've managed to convince myself that the alcohol makes me think better.

      Eight if I'm... I don't remember now.

UFC really sucks these days.  I would love to go back to the originals:

      Two rules:
      No fish-hooking.
      No eye gouging.

Back when you had people like Tank Abbot that just liked to inflict pain, just because he could, and actually enjoyed doing it...

      >>>  I would love

So "you" want to get into the ring with Tank and original rules?

      I'd pay for that.

As a martial artist myself,   I've been eye gouged, fish hooked, hair pulled, groin shots and even threatened with biting (maybe more than threats, I don't remember now)... I appreciate a few rules for the safety of the competitors.

Of course the rules don't always help, all of the above happened to me with rules in place.

      >>So "you" want to get into the ring with Tank and original rules?

      I'm a lover not a fighter!

But people did and that is what made it great!

I miss the old ones where a 'boxer' thought they could compete and a quick
kick to the head laid them out!

      >>I appreciate a few rules for the safety of the competitors.

It started out as semi-organized pit fighting.  To find the best of the best w/o weapons.  Run what ya brung!

Now it is pretty much who has the best ground game unless neither does or a hay maker lands.

Guess there is still the Toughman contests for pure entertainment value!

I love a good ground match.
I will concede that some (many) of them aren't exciting though.

The rise of the ground-n-pounders has led to the stagnation.
If you want savage, a ground-n-pound guy against someone with no ground game is about as brutal as it gets.

The problem though is you get enough people that can defend fairly well and they tie up the GnP'er, even when you
get two of them, whichever ends up on top will get tied up.  It's just the nature of the fight.

Take out all of rules and what happens?  Same thing, except worse because the tie-ups will be absolute.  With no rules you can't afford an opening. The guy on bottom won't even attempt to escape, they'll just lock down and wait for ref to stand them up.  Of course you'll get lucky shots and overwhelming skill mismatches, but I'm talking about the matches where there actually "could" be something interesting happening.

If you want non-stop action, give more scoring weight to takedowns and eliminate ground striking completely.  Grapplers will grapple.  Strikers will strike and wrestlers will happily throw you around all day. The matches will be scrambles to determine exactly who is better at what on that day and whether they can force the match into their strong suit.

The ground and pound experts have a fantastic marriage of all three skills, but it too often leads to boring fights.
