DVD Decoder
Grrrrr.....
My display is:
Gateway EV700 - Velocity 128
My DVD player is:
MT1316 BDV212B
(whatever that means)
I installed Win2K, and put in a DVD.....
"There is no Windows 2000 compatible DVD Decoder installed on this system. A DVD decoder device or decoder software is required to play movies (a DVD drive alone is not sufficient).
If this computer could "...yada..yada...yada (not applicable)
NOW what?

Hi caraf_g,
If you installed a new DVD (out-of-the-box), it might be that there is some decoding S/W on one of the attached disks that came with the DVD device.
Check these disks as well.
Hope this help,
Nosterdamus

Strictly speaking it is not possible to offer a DVD decode free of charge. The MPEG algorithms are patented and the licensed under which they can be distributed make it pretty much impossible.
I will say, however, that the terms seem to be pretty flexible. There are excellent DVD decoders like WinDVD and PowerDVD in the sub-US$30 range.
Come on, if you can afford a couple of DVD movies, you can afford the player software.... Plus (as I've already mentioned) most have FREE downloads that you can try out before you pay your money.

Just to let you all know - the manufacturer forgot to provide the software. He's sending out PowerDVD to me so that should solve the problem.
I'll accept Nosterdamus' comment as (s)he first mentioned PowerDVD

Well well.... the saga continues.
Manufacturer sent me PowerDVD version 1.6
MuhahahaahaahAAAAAhahaha.. ....... what a piece of rubbish.
The installation crashed. I then downloaded version 2.0 upgrade, but although *its* installation didn't crash, it didn't work either.
In the end I downloaded WinDVD, and it *did* work.
Since jhance recommended it:

That's the point. There is no DVD deciding software installed on this machine.
caraf_g,
You need some kind of software to play your DVD movies. As it says in the message you've quoted, a DVD drive is _NOT_ enough.
I'd suggest WinDVD from:

In my experience it's the best DVD player out there. They have a free trial version that you can download before you buy....
