> Unable to access Documents & Settings: Access Denied<
Hi,
This problem is almost exactly the same as "https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20314787/Access-Denied-on-old-Documents-and-Settings.html" but am willing to give 200 points on this question if someone can help resolve my problem in the next couple of days.
My problem:
I had an XP (Home Ed) installation on NTFS that will now not boot at all (regardless of various attempts to revive it). I would like to retrieve the data from my 'Documents & Settings' directory on C: before I rebuild it fully. So I have taken a W2000 machine (on NTFS) and plugged the XP HDD in as a slave (on C:). The idea being that I would just copy the docs across. No such luck, with NTFS being as secure as it is.
I can see the user directory below Documents & Settings and the sub-dirs below that (Cookies/Favorites/My Documents etc) but when I try to expand them out I get "Access Denied" error msg.
I assume that this is because I have not got rights to the data on that section fo the HDD as i am not logged in - that is fair enough but how do I get in them now that the XP HDD won't boot?
What I have tried already:
* I have unhidden operating system files in Windows Explorer
* used cacls command to change the rights of that dir to make as much Full Control as poss.
cacls "C:\documents and Settings\karen" /T /E /G :F
which when I looks shows the following rights ..
C:\>cacls "c:\documents and settings\karen"
c:\documents and settings\Karen NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)( IO)F
<Account Domain not found>F
<Account Domain not found>(OI)(CI)(IO)F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI )(CI)F
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)F
BUILTIN\Guests:(OI)(CI)F
BUILTIN\BUILTIN:(OI)(CI)F
The 2000 machine I am logging into has my account as administrator and I have also tried logging into the local machine rather than our domain.
I have tried creating an account of the same name as on the XP HDD on the 2000 machine but knew that wouldn't work.
I was thinking of using a Disk Recovery tool to pull the data off but I assume I would have the same NTFS problems once I copied it across.
If you need any more information please just ask - my response will be quick as I am under pressure here.
Regards
Charlie

Just did that and made sure after I took control that the new permissions propogated down the dirs and I was sorted.
God knows why I was pissing around with all that CACLS stuff for when I could just do that. Just saved my skin (and more wasted hours)
Thanks Crazy One - 200 points are all yours
