How to stop people accessing certain folders...

Hi Yall,
I've just arrived into work today and some nice person logged on to my machine and deleted half of a program which I really need and cannot get hold of for a while. (The point of this I do not know)

As you can imagine I'm REALLY happy about this whole turn of events. What is the best way to hide or deny access to certain programs. Maybe put a password on them which cannot be bypassed by anyone except me...

Thanks
Cathal

if u're using windows 98, it's quite difficult to control the security. anyhow, u can always set password at the entry level so that ppl can't easily log on to your computer.

if u're using win NT or 2000, then it'd be easier to control the whole situation. u can set password to certain folder which u dun wish ppl to have the access to it. This is only applicable for NTFS but not FAT 32.

good luck.

You can get utilities such as Norton and encrypt certain parts of your hard drive so that they cannot be read until a password is entered.
Here is an open question to follow which will probably help - https://www.experts-exchange.com/jsp/qShow.jsp?qid=20074951
Folder Guard helps you to keep sensitive files and folders safe and secure on your computer.

There is no way to protect files or folders in Windows 98, however, you can protect the whole PC by using a power on or hard drive password that you must enter before the machine even loads the operating system.  You do this by going into the BIOS, since all are different, I can't tell you exactly how on your machine, but look for something under security.  It is not the same as an administrator password, they only protect the BIOS.

Sorry, I should have added in my first comment that there is no way using standard Windows components.  Obviously, Crazyone is aware of a third party utility I've never seen.

You might search Tucows.com and see if they have any freeware for this...

Thanks CrazyOne...
I was hoping that there was an inbuilt windows utility for protecting programs but Folder Guard has done the job - Thanks

Yeah a lot of questioners and Experts (like you and myself)are asking about this. Protecting files and folders have become a big concern and it is unfortunate that it is not built directly into Win 9x. Poledit is a consideration but everytime I tried to use it it would bog down my system, sometimes freezing it. So I gave up on it. Heck I did not even know about Folder Guard until I started hanging out at EE. :>)

BTW are you getting any email notifs? I have't gotten any since Fri. evening. The only reason I knew this question got accepted was because I looked in my profile and saw it there.

Yeah I am still getting the notification...
But I've stopped going to the site lately because everytime I do it seems to be down... Must be a few gremlins in the system.

It turns out that I have to remove Folder Guard from my machine as the I.T. department do not take kindly to people having programs like this on work PCs...
Ah well, I'll just have to put up with it if somebody decides that they want to butcher some of my programs...
