XP Home upgrade from Windows 98SE
Was helping a friend who upgraded from Windows 98 SE to XP Home and has a number of problems. Prior to upgrading to XP Home, had new Hard Drives (IDE) installed, and noticed that Windows 98SE was installed on "D" versus "C" drive, and the upgrade to XP Home there as well.
Comments/ideas appreciated in terms of this being a significant problem and easiest possible recourse. He's not willing to do a clean install/fdisk, etc. and wants to minimize chaos and reinstallation of applications.
The most consistent problem surfaced when he upgraded his Dial Up account to SBCGlobal/Yahoo dial up for XP; Outlook 6 consistently crashes and runs the error report process.
Thanks, will check back when I can.

The upgrade was done a couple of months ago, and for the most part things are quasi-stable (ROFL). The BIOS was updated previously, all standard checks and troubleshooting I've done, but about to go visit there now to see what else I can do to rectify the Outlook Express and Email problem.
Was hoping for some thoughts on Windows XP being on "D", any other problems others may have had with the SBCGlobal/dial up CD for XP as it regards Outlook Express 6. Last check all that isn't needed in start-up has been disabled; no autolog in, etc.
Will try moving Virtual Memory from D/windows disk to C shortly and run chkdsk/ f to see if there's anything obviously in trouble as well as sfc /scannow.
Thanks for the input, will check back when I return from this adventure.

You can install any OS on any partiton, as long as C: contains the minimal boot files.
I have multiboot systems on anywhere from c: to J: and have not had any problems.
I hope this helps !

Thanks, SysExpert. Just spent a quite some time on that problem system; most perplexing.
He upgraded his prodigy, which was never XP compatible until they merged with Yahoo (recently). After the merge, they sent out CDs to create new SBCGlobal/Yahoo dial in services and connectoids. Followed all instructions to get Outlook Express 6 to work in the new environment, and it did for some time but he experienced problems with OE recently, and could not get mail. Contacted sbc/yahoo tech support, they sent me the pop3 and smtp settings, verified them all, created a new account for him within Outlook Express 6, and everything looks right BUT doesn't work.
I'm really baffled. Your help is most appreciated. I was able to get him his Email through Yahoo/SBC but not through Outlook Express; checked WindowsUpdate, all's current. Each time he tried to download his mail c/o OE, he gets a persistent and repeated login screen (though already logged in); if he cancels out of the login, OE closes with errors.
WT_ blank? Ideas and recommendation most welcome, ran out of time and will go back tomorrow.
Thanks,
Asta

P.S. Standard 56K modem (dial up) using the Yahoo dialer, although no such option on the connectoids, so chose to always use the default # to dial out.

Thanks, that's one idea; also thought to import the address book and mail from OE first to Outlook 2000, but that's a problem as well. What a fiasco; thanks, more tomorrow when I've had some time to work with the system a bit more. When I first tried changing mail to Outlook, got the old msoe9.dll problem/error. It just keeps getting better.

2) Disable all the startup stuff using msconfig.
3) Update ALL the drivers, and the BIOS.
4) Make sure that you do a Ghost backup or similar, since I think that in the long term, a fresh install will be required.
I hope this helps !
