What is an enterprise system
In software we have different categories like application development, web development, client-server applications.
One such category which is in great demand these days is enterprise system or enterprise solutions. What exactly is this. Can i create sophisticated enterprise systems or solutions with vc++. If yes then tell me what are the realted technologies og vc++ which can help me in creating these solutions. Another point is that is c# going to relegate vc++ to background. Is it really a subtitute for vc++. Is future of a vc++programer still bright

writing an enterprise system is no trivial task. the likley hood is that such a system would be written in C or C++ beacuse of the power and control it provides but this is not always true. also you will be writting applications that have a long run-life, i.e. a web server that runs continuosly. for these type of applications you have to be extra carefull with memory management, for example if every 1 minute you app allocates 1 meg without later freeing it eventually it will exhaust memory and you will die, for apps with a short life these things can often go un-noticed or you can ignore them as when the app closes the memory is freed anyway
c# is in my opionion a new jazzed up version of C++ with namespaces. ive read a bit about it and it seems like a strike between C++ and Visual Basic. there is no way it will replace C++ as so many apps are written in C++ and besides C# will be good for some things and C++ others, (horses for courses),fitness for purpose will decide this.
on a final note you will need to get convestant with NT services as most server-type apps will run as a service. also you will have to get good with networking protocols such as TCP/IP, for this learn about winsock and sockets. visual C++ in my opionion provides a good platform for this kind of deveoplment, i have just finished a 10,000 line C++ program (a parallel distributed MP3 server)
i wish you good luck on writing an enterprise system and would be keen to know what it is that you are going to implement.
hope this helps
Paul
