Child to Parent

to find all the supperiors of ADAMS we use the following
 query in oracle

SELECT level, ename name, empno, mgr
FROM emp
START WITH ename = 'ADAMS'
CONNECT BY empno =  PRIOR mgr;
But the above query is not working with MS-SQL .

CONNECT BY does not exist in SQL Server, and there is no replacement... The only way is that you develop a stored procedure working with temporary table(s) or with cursor(s).

Cheers
BTW, CONNECT BY is an extention provided by Oracle, that is not ANSI standard

You can do this if you're using SQL 2000, by creating a function which is new in 2000.
How about this?

SELECT level, ename name, empno
  FROM emp
  WHERE empno IN
        (
        SELECT mgr FROM emp WHERE ename = 'ADAMS'
        )

points to nigelrivett...
fine with me, angelIII
Sorry, i didn't want to offend you. But the requirements said "all the superiors", which means all levels down.
Your suggestion only gives the direct superior.
gmoriak only suggest that it can be done in SQL2k, but no indication to the implementation.
My own suggestion only states that SQL has nothing similar buildin, and that one need to use temporary tables like nigelrivett's indication demonstrates.
